Save Money with Homemade Ketchup

We bet you use a lot of ketchup!

This simple recipe is easy to make and will save you lots of money at the supermarket.

Ingredients:

  • 6-7 oz jar of tomato paste
  • 3 or 4 tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup honey or sugar
  • A pinch of pepper if you like

Method:

Dice the tomatoes (don’t worry about being neat as they’re going to end up as ketchup!). Next, simmer the tomatoes in a saucepan for a couple of minutes. After the tomatoes have been mashed up, you can add the rest of the ingredients to the saucepan. You will need to let the ingredients bubble for a few minutes until they form into a mixture. Take the saucepan off the heat. The next step requires you to be very careful – pour the mixture into a blender. Place the lid on tight, and double check before you hit the on button. The last thing you want is hot tomato mix all over your face! Blend the mixture until it reaches a smooth consistency. Once you are happy with the consistency, you can package the ketchup into recycled glass jars. And there you have it – tasty ketchup in a few easy steps. We bet it was cheaper than buying ketchup from the supermarket.

Use it on:

We all love ketchup. There’s nothing better than a tasty burger with ketchup! Hotdogs and ketchup are a match made in heaven and who can resist delicious French fries covered in ketchup?

If you’ve made a big batch of ketchup get creative and think of other dishes this tasty sauce could be added to. What about adding ketchup to a chili, cheese and bean dip? Or making your own creamy ketchup dip for guests? You could also try mixing ketchup in with your marinades or adding ketchup to your meatloaf and burger patties.
